Comedy writer highlight: Angie Robinson

Updated: Jan 17, 2022

Angie Robinson (@mzzz_robinson) is a full-time DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia)-based comedian who has worked with Tony Woods, Schewitz Whichard, and others. She works on a military installation, can do a split, and her north star is remaining humble, grateful, focused, and funny. Also known as the “QT on DUTY of Comedy,” she will be in three local showcases in January (open to the public: Comedy Night on January 14, and Queens of King Street on January 7).

Below, we made her answer five short questions.

What do you do in your free time?

I love Criminal Minds (and my favorite movie is Death at a Funeral). I love seafood; I SEE food and eat it. I also drink, and call Tito’s the Devil de Evil, since I tend to make bad decisions when drinking a lot of it. Most recently, I got rid of my BOB (battery-operated boyfriend) ... Because I broke it.

How did you get into memes?

I am affectionately known as the Queen of Memes. In fact, a friend of mine created “The Queen of Memes” Facebook page for me, where I post memes that I get from all over. I have a large network of people of people who send me memes, videos, and pictures daily. If they make me laugh, catch my attention, or push the limit, I’ll post it as I laugh. 😂

(I just got out of Facebook jail about a week ago. The funny thing about being on Facebook / Instagram timeout is that the material I posted came from those sources 😂 ... Go figure.)

Tell us about your comedy mentor.

Now that’s a tough one; there are soooooooo many great talents that have paved the way and opened doors for women in comedy like myself. If I had to go old-school, I would have to say Moms Mabley. Her abrupt, bold, pure honesty and spin on life tickles me, and to date, there has never been another one like her. New school: Tony Woods and Schewitz Whichard, both of whom I have had the pleasure of working with on many occasions. To actually be able to learn from the greats has been an amazing journey, and I am truly humbled by and grateful for the experiences.

The world better get ready because THE QT ON DUTY is on the scene.

How did you come up with your best joke?

Hmmmm, all of them are my best jokes I suppose LOL. To be honest, I don’t know. People just like my work / style because I tell jokes that are real and relatable which basically give you a quick glimpse of my reality, life, and story.

Describe your comedy writing process.

Now that’s funny 😂 I really don’t have one. I listen to music and start jotting down different things I have done or seen throughout life, and start from there. I have a little notebook that I carry around that has random notes in it. If someone were to read it, they would probably think I have a few screws loose/that I am off my rocker and need some meds, or that they are seeing untranslated Morse code. It’s clear only to me.
